Cross-channel ferries

An abnormal load, which must be declared to the Port of Dover and the Port of Dunkerque, is any vehicle that has:

  • Height exceeding 4.8m (15'-9") or
  • Width exceeding 3.2m (10'-6") or
  • Length exceeding 22m (72') or
  • Weight exceeding 45 tons (45,000kg ~ 99200lbs).


On our Dover - Dunkerque route Norfolkline's limits in terms of vehicle size are:

  • Maximum height 4.9m (16’-1”)
  • Maximum width 5.0m (16’-4”)
  • Maximum length 26m (85’-4”)

 

The maximum weight that can be shipped depends on number of axles, and number of wheels per axle.

Applications for transportation of abnormal loads are required 2 working days prior to the scheduled time of departure & details of the load are to be provided in the out of gauge and exceptional load request form available below, and should faxed to the port of departure:

North Sea Ferries

Due to restrictions at the entrance to our Vlaardingen terminal the following vehicles must be considered as abnormal loads:

  • Height exceeding 4.2m
  • Width exceeding 3.1m

 

An additional entrance is available for vehicles up to 4m in width, but any vehicle longer than 18m that tries to use this entrance will have problems turning in to it.

 

  • Maximum weight for Vlaardingen-Killingholme is 20 tons/axle, 4 wheels/axle and a total maximum weight of 60 tons
  • Maximum weight for Vlaardingen-Felixstowe is 22.5 tons/axle, 4 wheels/axle and a total maximum weight of 60 tons
